Embroidery with GWiSE
Have you seen the rise in fiber arts used for women’s rights activism? Community Co-Chair Kris has in articles like this, this and this. She wanted to learn a new skill with her GWiSE pals!
Join GWiSE for a private embroidery lesson on Tuesday, November 5th from 6 – 8PM at Aeronaut Brewery in Somerville. The lesson is from 6:15-7:15 and is taught by Emily Tirella owner of Make & Mend, a second hand crafting store at Bow Market in Somerville.

Three-Minute Thesis Competition
We are excited to announce our second Three Minute Thesis competition, on Tuesday, October 16th, 11 AM-1 PM, organized in collaboration with the Snell Library.
The 3MT is an academic competition that challenges PhD students to describe their research within three minutes, with one static slide.
The winners will get amazing prizes by library, including a guest appearance on the What’s New podcast for the top 3 finishers, credit to the 3D printing studio ($100 for first place, and $50 for second place), as well as gift cards to local businesses.
If you wish to present your doctoral work, you will need to submit an abstract of your thesis (250-300 words).
The abstract submission deadline is on Monday, October 1st, at midnight. All graduate students are welcome, and you can sign in as an audience member if you do not wish to present your research. Free pizza will be served.

Description: Come educate yourself about Title IX and other workplace issues. The format of the event will be a discussion about various situations students may ago through and how to best deal with them. Northeastern’s Office for University Equity and Compliance will be present to help us better understand how they can help for Title IX related issues and we will also discuss where to go for other problems we may be faced with. This will be an inactivate event so attendees will have the opportunity to ask questions and get more familiar will the topics covered.

Outreach volunteer training workshop
What: Join the Center for STEM Education for a volunteer training workshop. Training is required for future participation in Center for STEM Education outreach events. At this workshop, you will discuss what it means to be a volunteer, receive a quick training session, have a feedback discussion, brainstorm some new activities, and complete the necessary forms.

Girls’ Day @ the MIT Museum
What: Girls’ Day is not only for girls, but the goal is to celebrate women scientists, and show (and inspire) diversity in the sciences. GWISE will be hosting a hands on activity exploring Earth & Environmental Sciences.

Girl Scouts STEM Conference & Expo

Leadership Framework Workshop
Welcome back to an exciting new semester! We are starting the year with a Leadership Development workshop, with special guest Steve McGonagle of the Gordon Institute of Engineering Leadership. In this interactive workshop we will discuss leadership vs. management, what makes a good leader, and how to use your own core values to be successful professionally and personally. The event will take place  on Wednesday, January 17th, 11:30AM-12:30PM in Stearns 415. The workshop is open to all graduate students, and we will provide free pizza.

Self defense class
We are excited to announce our R.A.D. self-defense class on Wednesday, October 11th, 5:30PM-8PM in Kariotis Hall 202. The event is organized in collaboration with N.U. Police Department and will be taught by trained and certified R.A.D. instructors.

GWISE Travel Awardees
Our GWISE Travel Award for outstanding graduate students is dedicated to the advancement of graduate students in STEM fields.
GWISE strives to promote the equality and acknowledgement of women in STEM fields. The purpose of this award is to enable students to present their work at scientific conferences to gain exposure to exciting fields and well-respected researchers. In addition, we encourage all awardees to serve as ambassadors to increase the visibility and influence of women in STEM.

In the past year, GWISE volunteers have participated in several outreach opportunities around Boston. Some of our favorite events were the Girl Scout STEM Conference and Expo, where we built small motors with young female scientists, and NanoDays at the Museum of Science, where we led activities in nanoscale science and engineering for kids at the museum.

Oral Presentation Skills Workshop
10/23/2013
This event was the first of a two part presentation skills series (to be paired with a poster workshop in the spring semester). Professor Alan Zaremba from Communication Studies and Diane Ciarletta from Career Services gave 20-minute presentations on effective oral presentations. Professor Zaremba presented on general techniques and common mistakes of presenters, while Mrs. Ciarletta focused on scientific presentations.

Science Club for Girls Sister Circles

GWISE has partnered with Science Club for Girls to participate in their “Sister Circles” once a semester. GWISE arranged tours of three research labs for 10-15 8th-12th-grade girls from local Boston schools. Then, we had a panel discussion with GWISE members where the girls asked questions on topics including college admissions, graduate school, research, personal life, etc.

Northeastern’s Center for STEM Education STEM field trip

8th grade students from Curley School in Jamaica Plain attended a field trip to Northeastern with activities on water pollution, oil spills, and overfishing. Some GWISE members volunteered for various amounts of time during the 10am-2PM field trip.

MathWorks Hosts Pizza Lunch and Networking

Mathworks hosted a pizza lunch and presented on positions in their company and some of the projects they work on (i.e. robotics competition using their software). Then, there was time for networking with their representatives and among the attendees.

Boston Citywide Science Fair (Region VI)

The Center for STEM Education hosted a science fair at Northeastern’s Cabot Center. GWISE members participated in judging, and set up a table with a grip strength demonstrations for all the participants to enjoy.
