My hobbies include cooking, reading, and occasionally painting. I admire GWISE’s commitment to empowering and uplifting everyone in STEM. The events held each semester provide invaluable opportunities for personal and professional growth. Serving as the Media Chair previously was particularly enjoyable, as it allowed me to manage the club’s social media presence effectively.

My academic journey has led me to Brigham and Women’s Hospital at Harvard Medical School, where I am actively engaged as a research trainee, focusing on the Ebola virus. In my free time, I enjoy reading and binge-watching true crime documentaries. I joined GWISE because its mission deeply resonates with me. GWISE offers a platform that empowers women and fosters a community where we can share experiences, challenges, and triumphs.

I am passionate about advancing healthcare innovations, particularly in microbiology and antimicrobial research, to address global challenges like antibiotic resistance and promote accessibility to treatment. In my free time, I enjoy photography, dancing, and exploring nature.
As the Secretary of GWISE, I strive to ensure seamless communication and organization, fostering a supportive community that empowers women in STEM through impactful events and initiatives.

I enjoy volunteering in the local community and continuously seeking new learning opportunities and mentorship in her field. As a woman in biotechnology, I have faced barriers and challenges in my academic and professional journey. Through GWiSE, I found a welcoming community that shares similar experiences and is committed to empowering each other’s success. The mentorship, professional development resources, and sense of belonging I have gained have been invaluable in building my skills and confidence to thrive in a STEM career.

I am passionate about advancing the drug discovery pipeline and molecular modeling and strive for efficient solutions in the healthcare domain. A self-proclaimed dessert enthusiast, I find absolute joy in baking. Reading, dancing, and singing are a few of my favorite ways to unwind and recharge.
I aim to foster connections with other institutions and create pathways for students to engage with industry professionals in this role. GWISE’s mission to create an inclusive and empowering environment for not only women but EVERYONE in the STEM field motivated me to join the team.

Research interest: optimizing production of a chemotherapy drug that’s produced in the leaves of the medicinal plant Catharanthus roseus
I am excited to forge connections between local companies and Northeastern graduate students. Organizations like the Society of Women’s Engineers and GWISE are important to me to meet peers and mentors who share this passion for promoting women in STEM. Some of my hobbies include reading (with a goal of reading 52 books in 2024), traveling to new countries, attending concerts, and going on bike rides.
Sushmitha Katherine Jayaraj

Research Interests: Data Science and Applied machine learning models.
My hobbies include surfing, photography, and dancing. As an Outreach member of GWISE, I am eager to contribute by expanding our reach within the STEM community and promoting the inclusion of women in science and engineering. I plan to organize engaging events, from networking sessions to educational workshops, that create spaces for meaningful connections and knowledge sharing.
Alexa Van Voorhis

PhD student in the College of Chemical Engineering
She is a PhD student in the College of Chemical Engineering. Her research focuses on the metabolic engineering of microbes for sustainable compounds. In addition to GWISE, she is also involved in the Graduate Student Senate in Chemical Engineering and the PhD Student Council. Outside of school, she enjoys running, cooking, and spending time with friends and family.

As the new Community Development Chair for GWISE, I’m excited to help create a space where everyone in STEM feels included, supported, and empowered.
GWISE has been instrumental in breaking down barriers for women in STEM, and I’m thrilled to contribute to this mission by organizing upcoming events that will be both engaging and impactful. I believe men have a vital role in supporting women’s advancement in STEM, and I’m looking forward to collaborating with all members to build a stronger, more inclusive community for everyone.

Research interests: Cell and gene therapy fields, design of therapeutic mRNA vaccines
My hobbies are playing outdoor sports like soccer or badminton or simply going for a run. GWiSE has been instrumental in helping me develop leadership skills, build a strong network, and gain valuable insights from experienced professionals in STEM. In this role, I want to provide a platform for open dialogue on important issues related to diversity and inclusion.
