At GWISE, our mission is anchored by four core pillars: Professional Development, Advocacy, Outreach, and Community Building. It uses a DNA double helix as a central theme, symbolizing the foundational elements of the organization. We empower women in STEM by offering extensive resources, training, and career advancement opportunities through professional development events. Our advocacy initiatives work to champion policies and practices that promote gender equity in STEM fields. Through outreach, we inspire and engage future generations of women scientists and engineers, fostering a deep appreciation for STEM. Community building is at the heart of GWISE, creating a robust network where members can connect, collaborate, and grow. These pillars collectively fortify and advance the role of women in STEM.
Northeastern University GWiSE is part of the New England GWiSE Consortium, a consortium of graduate women’s groups in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) fields from universities across the New England region. It is a student-led cooperative that supports and celebrates women and gender minorities pursuing graduate studies in STEM disciplines. NE GWiSE organizes monthly seminars, annual retreats, and events like the “Spring to Action” conference to promote gender equity and equality in STEM. The organization offers resources and guidance to help graduate students with professional development, mental health, gender bias and discrimination, anti-racism, or finding your community. Together, the leaders from the ten universities aim to uplift women in the New England academic community.
